Dan Withey

Dan Withey was born in Birmingham England in 1986. In 2004 he immigrated to Australia and studied a Bachelor of Visual Communication (specialising in Illustration) at the University of South Australia. Upon graduating in 2007 with the Design Institute of Australia’s student of the year award, Withey decided to transition into a career in Visual Arts. Since this time he has had over 17 successful solo shows.

His art, although addressing dilemmas of modern day society such as consumerism, the environment and freedom, are still imbued with a playful humour and humbleness that make them completely unpretentious and accessible to all audiences. As Dan’s work continues to develop in both skillfulness and substance he is certainly an artist to follow.

Artist Statement - The Seas of Limbo

I am articulating the space in-between, a limbo where things are uncertain, it’s neither this nor that. It’s the idea of a carnival where things are both dark and light and the sinister and the friend both inhabit the same place but on a slightly different plane.

Through this body of work I portray the many parts of one’s persona as well as the emotional armour we all possess. I show this through multiple parts including faces and limbs which depict the way we grow, melding life experiences into our existing personality.

The carnival was traditionally held as a last hurrah before Lent – the religious period for purification though fasting. I have been reflecting on what would be the modern equivalent. I see the weekend playing the part of the carnival where your inner self is allowed to come out and Lent would be the working week where you remain in control.
