Katherine Hattam

Katherine Hattam
Born Melb 1950

As my parents knew many artists well enough to know how precarious a life it could be I was very much dissuaded from going to Art school - these artists Fred Williams , Charles Blackman , Arthur Boyd , Len French , Jan Senbergs , Dale Hickey and others became successful but after a struggle . So I went to university not Art school - being Academic I enjoyed four years of studying literature and a psychoanalytic theory of politics - despite having made serious large drawings from 16 .

The university books and study reappear in many of the works in this group I call " The Grammar of living "
Having exhibited every year from 1978 onwards and being bought by the NGV and NGA I eventually was in the very first cohort to complete a masters in painting at the VCA Melb and later a PHD . I was Australia China fellow in 2002 - have held solo shows in the Geelong Art Gallery , the Bendigo art gallery , the Warrnambool art gallery and am represented in the collections of NGV , NGA , AGSA , AGNSW , QAG goma , QUT , Heide Museum of Modern Art , The Ian Potter museum the University of Melb . Latrobe University Museum , The Bendigo art gallery . I am represented by Daine Singer Gallery Melbourne and Art House Gallery Sydney.
