Louise Feneley

Louise Feneley is an artist based in Adelaide, South Australia.

This is a completely new series of paintings (visually a significant departure from the ‘drapery’ paintings for which I am best known) which began in 2011 when I accompanied the Scientific Expedition Group surveying fourteen different sites around Arkaroola in the Northern-Flinders Ranges, South Australia. This trip proved to be profoundly important to the direction of my work in that the experience of this particular landscape – ancient, powerful, mysterious, strange, beautiful, silent, vast – embodies the same sense of the numinous that I have been searching for in my painting for many years.
This place/location/landscape, which I consider the anti-thesis to our western culture in its stillness, its majesty, its mysterious presence, was a reminder that connection to these qualities within oneself are being eroded by the everyday frantic activity present in our culture.  Hence it was the catalyst for the new direction my work has taken.
I feel the land (and nature) needs its story restated, so I have been following this prompt, firstly painting studies followed by major pieces where I felt rock formations as living, ancient, ‘flesh of the earth’ (‘Lost Mother’), and sky as a complementary, numinous world, unpredictable and otherworldly.
