Janine Mackintosh

Janine Mackintosh b. 1971 creates unique contemplative assemblages using found natural materials, mainly collected from her heritage bush property on the wild south coast of Kangaroo Island. Mackintosh began her art practice by employing the techniques of museum plant collections but her pieces have since departed radically from tradition.
The artist is particularly fascinated by leaves which have been eaten by beetles or patterned by leaf-miner insects or display the effects of weather and seasons - as these things communicate the intricate systems and collaborations at work in Nature.

Mackintosh loves the visual excitement of repetition, where hundreds, or even thousands of objects are presented as one, yet she seeks to highlight their unique differences and introduces themes grounded in time and place.
The Australian War Memorial has acquired her work and six of her pieces are featured in the luxurious Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island, where her work is often purchased by international and high-profile visitors to the island.

Her primary motivation is to highlight conservation issues through her preservation artwork.

Statements

“Suspended disbelief draws the viewer instantaneously... Her work cannot be easily passed over; it draws one into it, demanding concentration on a number of levels, one of which is often missing in contemporary art today - that of contemplative engagement by the viewer… The collecting, the placement, the working out, the patience, the obsession, the understanding and final realisation of perfected beauty are all part of an intimidating process.”

Jan Jones, Australian Art Review

“There has been a notion that contemporary art can’t be beautiful, but this is very beautifully executed.”
Nick Mitzevich, Director, Art Gallery of South Australia (37th Alice Prize Judge)
